What your competitors’ Meta ads can teach you about winning more customers

How Long Does SEO Really Take? Setting Realistic Expectations for Business Owners

Your competitors may be showing you more than you realise

Most business owners think of advertising as a means to reaching potential customers. Fewer realise that advertisements can also provide valuable insight into how competitors are marketing their businesses.

Meta’s Ads Library allows anyone to view active advertisements running across Facebook and Instagram. While the tool was created to improve transparency, it also gives businesses an opportunity to better understand their market, customer expectations, and the strategies competitors are using to attract new business. The Library can be round here, it is completely free and available for anybody to use.

It is also possible to locate the Ads that your competitors are running directly from their Facebook page.  Simply go onto their Facebook page:

=
Click on their business name (to the right of their profile icon)
=
Then click on “Transparency and privacy policy” in the pop-up window
=
Click on “Go to Ad Library”
Note that ads will only be visible when searching directly via their Facebook page if they are currently running Meta Ads.

Pay attention to the messages your competitors repeat

One advertisement tells you very little. A marketing message that appears repeatedly over time is much more significant, and warrants your attention.  You want to look at repetition of similar messaging or themes, and then find the common threads in the ads.

If, for example, a competitor consistently promotes fast turnaround times, exceptional service, free consultations, or specialist expertise, there will be a reason for that because businesses tend to invest their advertising budget behind messages they believe resonate with their audience. Repetition in the messaging tells you that the message being repeated is resonating.

By studying these recurring themes, you will gain a better understanding of the concerns and priorities that influence buying decisions within your market.

The most visible ads often reveal the biggest opportunities

Not every advertisement performs well. In fact, many campaigns are tested and quickly abandoned.

One useful approach is to look for advertisements that have been running for an extended period. Your competitors will rarely continue spending money on campaigns that fail to generate results. Long-running advertisements often indicate that a particular offer, message, or creative approach is producing value.

Ask yourself why that message might be working and what it reveals about the customer needs in your market.

Look beyond the advertisement itself

The advertisement is often only the beginning of the customer journey.

Take the time to explore where your competitors’ advertisement leads.

=

What information appears on the landing page?

=

What product or questions are being answered?

=

What offer is being presented?

=

How is your competitor encouraging visitors to make contact?

These elements can provide valuable insight into how your competitors are generating enquiries and moving prospects towards becoming customers.

Learn from competitors without becoming one

The goal of competitor research is not imitation. It is understanding.

The most successful businesses use market intelligence to refine their own positioning and identify opportunities that others may have overlooked. Your investigation may discover gaps in your communication, customer concerns that are not being addressed, or ways to better explain the value of your products and services.

The objective is to learn from what is working while remaining true to your own brand and strengths.

Good marketing leaves clues

Businesses no longer need to rely solely on guesswork when making marketing decisions. Tools such as Meta’s Ads Library provide access to valuable information that can help you better understand your market and your competitors.
